Diagnosis failures are among the most dangerous mistakes that a doctor or medical team can make. They often cost time that patients don’t have to spare and cause serious and preventable injuries.
When a condition is delayed, missed, or misdiagnosed, the problem can quietly worsen while the patient believes they’re being treated properly. Patients sent home with the wrong information, incorrect medication, and/or care routine can turn a minor problem into a major one.
Delayed Diagnosis — When medical teams incorrectly assume a symptom to be related to a “minor” illness or injury, it can become a serious problem fast. A busy ER or “watch and wait” approach may lead to dangerous symptoms being overlooked when a proper care plan isn’t in place.
Missed Diagnosis — In some cases, physicians may ignore more serious issues because they believe they’ve already figured out what is wrong with a patient. They may also assume that symptoms showing up are common for specific age or health groups (elderly, infants, immunocompromised). It’s important that the medical staff thoroughly review and understand a patient’s health history when making a diagnosis.
Wrong Diagnosis — An incorrect diagnosis can happen when medical staff focus on a single symptom or a small number of symptoms for a diagnosis. Staff have a duty to ensure that treatment after a diagnosis is actually improving a patient’s condition. If the condition isn’t improving, the diagnosis could be incorrect. When staff simply assume the diagnosis is correct, patients may suffer life-changing injuries.
Failure to Order Proper Tests — Sometimes, doctors don’t see a symptom as being an “urgent issue.” A lack of urgency can lead to a patient being. In other cases, hospitals may feel pressure to admit and discharge patients as quickly as possible for financial reasons. Regardless, when doctors fail to order the proper tests on time, a patient’s condition can progress rapidly.
Failure to Refer to a Specialist — When a patient needs to be seen by a specialist, it’s critical that a doctor order those tests right away. A “wait and see” approach allows for symptoms to worsen while the patient awaits the care they need.
Ignoring or Misreading Test Results — Tests are only helpful when medical staff actually understand what they mean and how they apply to a patient’s health. When results are misread, it can lead to a misdiagnosis or an incorrect treatment plan. In some cases, test results that show a serious problem may not come back until after the patient has been discharged. In any case, medical staff have a duty to correctly read a patient’s test results and use the information to treat the patient properly.
When diagnosis failures change your health, you shouldn’t have to deal with the fallout alone. Your independence, your future, and your family’s future could be at risk because of a missed or incorrect diagnosis. Holding the people who made the mistake accountable matters — but so does your timing.
